Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) - a toothpaste detergent

Here’s what SLS does?

To be precise, SLS makes foam.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a very popular ingredient used to make foam for deeper cleaning in anything from toothpaste to cosmetics to cleaners. Have you ever wondered why one toothpaste requires you to spit more than another? That toothpaste contains sodium lauryl sulfate.

Why is SLS used in Toothpaste?

You might be curious why your toothpaste requires "soap" in it, but it helps to thicken your toothpaste as well as encourage foaming and the dissolution of dental plaque while you brush. Additionally, it is inexpensive and makes it simple for manufacturers to formulate several kinds of toothpaste.

However, sodium lauryl sulfate has been found to have some serious drawbacks that make it a good idea to look for an SLS-free toothpaste to brush with instead, despite the benefits for toothpaste manufacturing.

Concerns with toothpaste containing SLS

Degrades enamel

If researches are to be believed, increased amounts of lauryl sulfate decrease the amount of alkali-soluble fluoride deposited on the enamel.

Aphthous stomatitis

SLS can also increase the chances of aphthous ulcers. It is believed that the denaturing impact of SLS on the oral mucin layer, which exposes the underlying epithelium, causes an increase in the frequency of recurring aphthous ulcers. This has been supported by a number of studies.

Altered taste

In some individuals, a reduced or altered perception of taste which lasts up to 4 hours after using a toothpaste containing SLS. SLS interferes with the working of taste cells, changing taste perception. This unpleasant taste sensation is evident when citrus fruit juice is immediately consumed after brushing with SLS-rich toothpaste.

Burning sensation in the mouth

Burning sensation in the inner surface of the lips, tongue, or cheek and dryness of mouth while brushing with SLS-based toothpaste, have also been complained by some people. This can lead to anxiety and irritability.
