Do You Brush Your Teeth Too Strongly?

There is a specific way in which one ought to brush one's teeth. Dentists warn that excessively vigorous brushing or using the incorrect toothbrush can cause harm to the teeth and gums, including enamel loss and receding gums, all of which can cause dental sensitivity.

People "tend to brush forcefully" as they believe this is the only way to achieve a cleaner mouth and whiter smile. That's counterproductive since it causes recession of your gums and removes your teeth' white, shiny enamel, making them appear yellow and darker.

Worried that you might be brushing too vigorously? Check out the toothbrush you're using. It should still look brand new after three months of use at most. A flat, battered appearance indicates that you are brushing too hard.

How to Brush Your Teeth Correctly

You can train yourself to soften your brushing style, but it will take some mindfulness. If you follow these guidelines, you can protect your teeth and gums from harm while also reducing dental discomfort.

  • Put your teeth in good care by switching to a toothbrush with softer bristles. Consider replacing your floss every three to four months or sooner if it frays. Also, it is recommended that you pick up a toothbrush that is a good match for your mouth in terms of size and form.
  • The ideal angle for brushing your teeth is 45 degrees, allowing the brushes to clean more thoroughly underneath the gum line.

  • Move the brush back and forth slowly and carefully. Dentists suggest cleaning the exterior, interior, and chewing surfaces of teeth with short, tooth-wide strokes. Brush the inside surfaces of your front teeth using up-and-down motions while holding the brush at a vertical angle. Rather than forcing an electric toothbrush on your teeth, it would help if you let it do the work for you and gently swish it back and forth like a manual toothbrush. Try brushing with your nondominant hand to provide a light touch while cleaning your teeth.

  • We need to slow down. The American Dental Association (ADA) advises patients to wash their teeth for two minutes twice a day to eliminate plaque and prevent tooth decay. It may seem like an eternity to those who have never experienced it. You will only know what it's like once you brush for two minutes. However, it reminds you to brush more softly when you're not in a hurry.

Picking the Best Toothpaste (and Floss)

We recommend using a toothpaste that has been approved for use in India. Pick a toothpaste that has been verified to contain adequate ingredients by the FDA.

Here are some additional suggestions for maintaining good oral hygiene:

  • Brushing your tongue can help get rid of harmful breath-causing bacteria.
  • Once a day, floss in between your teeth to eliminate the plaque and germs that cause cavities and gum disease.
  • Limit sugary beverages and snacks and eat a balanced diet.
  • Always keep regular dental checkups (at least twice a year, preferably more often) to avoid and treat oral diseases.
